According to Mexico\u2019s Ministry of Economy, in 2026 the country maintains a network of 14 Free Trade Agreements with 52 countries, facilitating international trade and preferential access to different global markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is a Free Trade Agreement?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Free Trade Agreement (FTA) is an agreement between two or more countries that establishes rules to facilitate the exchange of goods and services. It may include benefits such as the elimination or reduction of tariffs, rules of origin, trade facilitation mechanisms, and provisions for different economic sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-1 wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What Free Trade Agreements does Mexico have in force in 2026?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this blog, we provide an updated overview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The USMCA is the trade agreement governing the relationship between Mexico, the United States, and Canada. It entered into force on July 1, 2020, replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement establishes the rules for trade across North America and includes provisions related to market access, rules of origin, customs procedures, investment, digital trade, labor, and environmental matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Mexico-Colombia Free Trade Agreement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trade agreement between Mexico and Colombia originated from the Group of Three (G3) Free Trade Agreement, originally signed by Mexico, Colombia, and Venezuela.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following Venezuela\u2019s withdrawal, Mexico and Colombia continued their trade relationship through the bilateral agreement and subsequently expanded its provisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Mexico-Chile Free Trade Agreement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mexico-Chile FTA entered into force on August 1, 1999, and establishes rules to facilitate the exchange of goods and services between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Mexico-Israel Free Trade Agreement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mexico-Israel FTA entered into force on July 1, 2000, with the objective of strengthening economic and trade relations between the two countries through preferential conditions for the exchange of goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Mexico-European Union Free Trade Agreement (EU-Mexico FTA)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The preferential trade relationship between Mexico and the European Union was established through the Economic Partnership, Political Coordination and Cooperation Agreement, commercially known as the EU-Mexico Free Trade Agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Mexico-European Free Trade Association (EFTA) Free Trade Agreement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mexico maintains a Free Trade Agreement with the four member states of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Iceland<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Liechtenstein<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Norway<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Switzerland<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement entered into force on July 1, 2001, and facilitates trade between Mexico and these European markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>7. Mexico-Uruguay Free Trade Agreement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mexico-Uruguay FTA entered into force on July 15, 2004, and establishes conditions to strengthen and facilitate the exchange of goods and services between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>8. Mexico-Central America Free Trade Agreement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mexico currently has a single FTA with Central America, covering:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Costa Rica<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>El Salvador<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Guatemala<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Honduras<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nicaragua<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This agreement replaced the previous treaties Mexico maintained with Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and the countries known as the Northern Triangle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>9. Agreement for the Strengthening of the Economic Partnership between Mexico and Japan<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Agreement for the Strengthening of the Economic Partnership between Mexico and Japan entered into force on April 1, 2005.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although its official name does not include the term \u201cFree Trade Agreement,\u201d it forms part of Mexico\u2019s network of trade agreements and establishes preferential conditions to strengthen trade and economic relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>10. Mexico-Peru Trade Integration Agreement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trade Integration Agreement between Mexico and Peru entered into force on February 1, 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement establishes preferential conditions for trade between the two countries and strengthens their economic integration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>11. Mexico-Panama Free Trade Agreement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mexico-Panama FTA entered into force on July 1, 2015, and establishes a framework to facilitate and strengthen trade relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>12. Additional Protocol to the Framework Agreement of the Pacific Alliance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mexico is a member of the Pacific Alliance along with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Chile<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Colombia<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peru<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its Additional Protocol entered into force on May 1, 2016, and deepens economic and trade integration among the four countries through provisions related to market access, rules of origin, trade facilitation, and other areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>13. Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mexico is a member of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agreement entered into force for Mexico on December 30, 2018, and connects the country with major Asia-Pacific economies and other international markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>14. Mexico-United Kingdom Trade Continuity Agreement<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Trade Continuity Agreement between Mexico and the United Kingdom entered into force in June 2021, following the United Kingdom\u2019s withdrawal from the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its objective is to maintain preferential conditions and ensure continuity in trade relations between the two countries.
