{"id":477,"date":"2026-09-22T18:06:18","date_gmt":"2026-09-22T18:06:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/remar.mx\/en\/?p=477"},"modified":"2026-09-22T18:11:41","modified_gmt":"2026-09-22T18:11:41","slug":"what-is-abandonment-of-goods-in-customs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/remar.mx\/en\/blog\/what-is-abandonment-of-goods-in-customs\/","title":{"rendered":"What is abandonment of goods in customs?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is abandonment of goods in customs?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the Mexican Customs Law, abandonment of goods refers to the transfer of ownership of goods held in customs custody to the Federal Treasury, either when the taxpayer expressly declares their intention to abandon the goods in writing or when the statutory period for their removal has expired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Types of abandonment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <strong>Article 29 of the Mexican Customs Law<\/strong>, goods held in customs custody may be deemed abandoned in favor of the Federal Treasury in two ways:<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Express abandonment<\/strong><br>When the owner declares in writing their intention to abandon the goods.<\/td><td><strong>Implied abandonment<\/strong><br>When the goods are not removed within the time limits established by law.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Passengers may expressly abandon goods when:<br>1. They enter Mexico with goods other than their personal baggage without declaring them.<br>2. The goods are subject to requirements and formalities established under customs regulations and these requirements are not met.<br>3. The total value of the goods does not exceed <strong>USD 3,000<\/strong>, or its equivalent in Mexican pesos.<br><strong>Note:<\/strong> This procedure applies provided that the passenger voluntarily declares their intention to abandon the goods and pays the corresponding fine.<\/td><td><strong>3 months:<\/strong> For goods intended to leave the country.<br><strong>3 days:<\/strong> For explosive, flammable, contaminating, radioactive or corrosive goods, as well as perishable goods and live animals.
