What are container megaships?

Container megaships are enormous vessels measuring approximately 400 meters in length (the distance from the bow to the stern).

Most of these types of ships have the capacity to carry around 18,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) containers, making them convenient vessels for transporting tons of cargo.

The largest among them is the HMM Algeciras, delivered in April 2020, with a maximum capacity of 23,964 TEU, a length of 399.9 meters, and a beam of 61 meters.

Although they may seem convenient due to their enormous cargo capacity, they come with certain limitations, such as:

  • Inadequate port infrastructures for unloading megaships
  • Avoidance of navigation in the Pacific Ocean
  • Limited ability to maneuver large waves
  • Negative ecological impact due to the large amount of fuel consumption

Despite these points, George Griffiths, editor of global container markets at S&P Global Platts, estimates that the construction of megaships will increase by 25% over the next few years, with the purpose of creating a standard capable of carrying more than 14,000 containers.
