What Are INCOTERMS?

One of the most important concepts you should know before starting to export is that of INCOTERMS, also known by its meaning: International Commercial Terms.

This term refers to the international trade negotiations carried out by importers and exporters to define the responsibilities and obligations of each party during international operations.

INCOTERMS are extremely useful to avoid confusion and establish terms very clearly. It is also important to highlight that they are not static and are continuously updated to adapt to the current context.

The classification of INCOTERMS

They are divided into groups by letters, and each one has its advantages and disadvantages for both exporters and importers.

Group E

Indicates that the exporter will wait for the transport at their premises and will be responsible for packaging the goods, while the buyer will be responsible for the transportation and the rest.

Group F

Establishes that the exporter is responsible for the goods until they are made available to the transportation carrier. From then on, logistics will be the responsibility of the buyer.

Group C

Dictates that the exporter is responsible for arranging transportation and the goods from the packaging stage to delivery at the destination. Once the goods are delivered at the port of shipment, the seller absolves themselves of responsibility for the goods.

Group D

In this INCOTERM, the seller becomes responsible for the goods from the packing phase to their delivery at the customer’s premises. The responsibility is fully assumed by the exporter.
